The style of the PURE DRX-702ES is clean and simple, belying the complexity within; this is a true all-round radio tuner, covering both digital and analogue bands. Gramophone, August 2003
The PURE installs itself quickly and cleanly, auto-tuning on both digital and analogue bands. On FM it does a good job of only storing those stations strong enough to give clean stereo, and using RDS data can allow DAB-style alphabetical sorting of stations by name, and thus fast access to favourites. I was particularly impressed by the tuner’s ability to get clean signals even from relatively distant stations - sensitivity is good - and also its handling of strong, high-quality FM broadcasts.
Some will prefer the warmer, more organic sound of the FM transmission, but the trade-off is occasional noise and interference, even with a good aerial. Digital radio’s sound emerges out of a much darker, silent background, and gives the impression of much higher detail levels. The luxury of the PURE tuner is that you can try both, and then enjoy the one that suits you best: the basic sound is very good indeed, with fine dynamics, plenty of weight in the bass and no shortage of treble sparkle, especially with digital transmissions; orchestral relays are highly convincing and chamber recitals have a real sense of presence and atmosphere.
This is a fine all-round tuner at a competitive price, and should be a big seller.
