It’s the first on sale for less than £300 Classic FM, March 2001
This is the digital radio that’s got everyone talking, because it’s the first on sale for less than £300. And it’s British, too. The DRX-601E’s sound is more than a match for that of the existing hybrid digital/analogue tuners from the big Japanese companies. It’s digital-only, but there’s a loop-through to connect in an analogue tuner if you already have one.
In use, its midband is expressive and informative and the treble nicely controlled, with only a hint of spit and excessive bite when handling rock and pop stations. Most of the time, the balance is hugely enjoyable, with a good sense of presence on location transmissions or recordings, and a very natural depiction of voices, be they male or female, singing or speaking.
If you already have a good FM tuner in your system, and reckon the time has come to add digital radio without trashing what you have, this is the tuner for you.
