The new model is still a DRX-601E at heart, but quite apart from the sleek silver styling and sexy blue LEDs it now has a better, white-on-blue display, and what the company calls psycho-acoustic compensation. PAC is a spot of whizzy signal processing designed to make the tuner sound more natural and less digital and it works exceptionally well, the new version having a rich, clean and extremely informative sound.
We like the twist and push tuning system - clearly Sony inspired - and the sound of the VideoLogic, whether fed from an outdoor aerial or even the wire supplied, proves convincing across a range of broadcasting from Radio 3 to Planet Rock. The bass is big and powerful, while the midband and treble are well controlled with not a niff of the digital artefacts some claim to hear on broadcast of this kind.
Simply, the style and finish of the new tuner would justify its extra cost over the giveaway original. That it also sounds better simply adds to its appeal and makes it a cracking buy.
