It's remarkable value for money, delivers a high standard of performance. Gramophone, August 2001
Some component changes have been made, although the digital-to-analogue conversion still uses 96kHz/24-bit devices, and the most interesting development is the introduction of what VideoLogic calls psycho-acoustic compensation. PAC uses digital signal processing in an attempt to make the sound more natural - less digital, if you like - and while some will shudder at the thought of the signal being messed around with, I have to say that the new model does sound better than the original.
Simply, the sound of the new model is smoother and has better scale and substance, this being particularly noticeable with orchestral relays, which also have a subtly enhanced sense of presence and atmosphere.
All of which means that the DRX-601ES is a hugely enjoyable listen, whether you use Classic FM as audio wallpaper during the day or sit up and take notice with evening concerts. There's all the immediacy of the live event, but none of those giveaway artefacts to remind that 'it's only radio', and the VideoLogic - at least when fed from a decent outdoor aerial doesn't display any of the digital reception problems some have experienced.
Indeed, in many locations it will prove perfectly possible to get clean radio sound with just the wire antenna supplied in the box, something that's very rarely the case with analogue hi-fi tuners.
For all those reasons the VideoLogic DRX-601ES is well worth consideration if radio is important to you and you're yet to make the leap into digital reception. It's remarkable value for money, delivers a high standard of performance and at last looks like something that's a pleasure to use, not something to be hidden away.
After all, why should budget mean cheap-looking?
