The DRX-601E broke new ground, and this ES variant builds on its strengths. What Hi-Fi?, September 2001
For a start it’s all British VideoLogic’s parent company Imagination Technologies is involved in many areas of computer hardware and software, enabling it to make its own basic components. In fact Imagination is now working closely with national commercial network provider Digital One to introduce those smaller, cheaper and less power-hungry tuners…
For the present VideoLogic has concentrated on making its trailblazing tuner - it was little more than half the price of any other digital model when it was launched - both look and sound better. The new silver finish and white-on-blue readout is much more on the money, and the fascia is anodised, not just painted, for a quality look.
The new model also uses VideoLogic’s own psycho-acoustic compensation system to make the sound less, well… digital. It works: comparing the E version with the ES does show that the latter is a bit warmer and smoother, without sacrificing any of the detail and dynamics digital broadcasting.
Setting up and using the DRX-601ES is simple, thanks to a tuning system that’s capable of sniffing out all the digital broadcasts available at the user’s location…
The sound? VideoLogic is more than a match for anything in this small market sector - the amazing £2300 TAG McLaren Audio T32R DAB aside.
The DRX-601E broke new ground, and this ES variant builds on its strengths.
We can’t wait to see what VideoLogic does next!
