This is a big cat in the sonic jungle.
Boys Toys, October 2001

VideoLogic, better known for their uncompromising PC speakers and sound cards, have blown open the whole DAB genre by pitching in a model at half the price of their competitors. As you can imagine, this has really rattled some cages...

...The clinical sound of DAB has been tweaked and the DRX-601ES boasts a fair old snarl with plenty of warmth to boot. VideoLogic is even threatening to bring out portable DAB tuners later in the year that will incorporate its high end PC speaker technology.

In the meantime, this is a big cat in the sonic jungle. If you want a real hi-fi tuner that doesn’t rely on your PC, you get a lot of technology for your loot.

Performance 18
Only marginally outclassed by the Arcam

Practicality 18
Controls are more basic, yet easy to get to grips with

Style 17
Despite clear economies, it’s still quite funky

Value 25
Expensive for a radio, radical value for DAB

Overall 78
Looking for a decent hi-fi based tuner? This is a tiger.

The Verdict

If you’re convinced that DAB is the way to go, the VideoLogic offers a rounded, forceful sound very much in the company of the other two units and in many ways, better than the Sony. It was lucid and detailed, although lacking a slight punch compared to the Arcam, which also sounded more open. These are subtle differences though and what it boils down to is, if you’re convinced by DAB, are you prepared to shell out for Arcam’s suave design, excellent functionality and slightly better sound, or pick up a simply great radio for half the price?
