The DRX-601E was a ground-breaking product, and the ES builds on its strengths, which is why it won our 2001 Product of the Year. What Hi-Fi?, April 2002
Essentially a tweaked DRX-601E, the ES version is warmer and smoother, without sacrificing any of digital radio’s appealing detail and dynamics.
Setting up and using the ES is simple, the tuning system finds all the digital broadcasts in your area. Don’t worry that there’s only nine presets - just spin the tuning control to scroll through the stations available, and push to make your choice.
There’s also full text capability, a remote control and a pair of loop-through sockets to allow an analogue tuner, or indeed any other line source, to share a set of amp inputs.
Soundwise, it’s more than a match for any digital radio here, bar the £2300 TAG. Speech, is extremely impressive, with no sign of any digital nasties to spoil the party.
The DRX-601E was a ground-breaking product, and the ES builds on its strengths, which is why it won our 2001 Product of the Year.
For: Excellent sound with decent quality broadcasts
Against: Nothing much, especially at this price
Verdict: Brings good quality digital radio to the mass market
