DRX-601EX Portable Digital Radio £500
The quality of digital radio is astonishing - no crackle or hiss, just a perfect, interference-free signal - but until recently it’s cost nearly a grand to get a decent one. VideoLogic has come up with some cool-looking, amazing-sounding machines for under £300 with the promise of prices going lower still, but its latest baby is this cute retro-styled portable digital radio. With a knowing glance at the design of the kitchen radio your mum used to like, the DRX-601EX has a subtly placed blue LCD screen which not only names the station you’re tuned to but also offers information such as the kind of station it is, or even the track or programme currently playing. And unlike most portable radios, it comes with a remote control. The sound is a great deal more natural than some earlier digital broadcast set-ups. And although is looks innocent enough from the front, it has plenty of connectivity for you to play your CD portable through the speakers or to record the signal to MiniDisc. Pricey but, to be honest, dazzling.
