Probably the only tuner you’ll ever need. T3, August 2003 Gold Award
DAB darling PURE Digital repackages last year’s award-winning tuner to make room for FM
PURE’s latest effort takes another well-aimed pop at its premium-priced rivals by squeezing DAB and analogue tuners into one smart, well-built box - the DRX-702ES - and inviting us to ponder how it does it all just £330…
The engine at the heart of this tuner is a feature-rich third-generation combined DAB/audio chip, first seen in last year’s 701 and neatly coupled with a USB slot for firmware upgrades to add new DAB features in the future. This tiny chunk of silicon packs in the capacity for 99 presets, a scrolling LCD text display, customisable station-ordering, fast auto-tune, date and time display and three stages of Dynamic Range Control to set the level of compression.
The analogue side hasn’t been neglected either, with a high-sensitivity FM/AM tuner that’s notably slick and has been given some of the usability features of DAB. 99 presets, one-touch RDS auto-tune, selection by station name and the ability to name AM and non-RDS stations.
Verdict
Performance 5/5
Value 4/5
Overall 5/5
Probably the only tuner you’ll ever need. At its best, the DAB sounds great, but crucially, the FM section isn’t included just to fill up the box - it competes with many standalone rivals.
